The Flying Mission Zambia fleet of aircraft dates from the late 1970’s to early 1980’s. We feel the aging of our planes in the increased maintenance needed on them. In the last couple of years, we have been looking for solutions to replace this fleet. Andy Kradolpher, Operations Manager, was in Austria in February of this year to test fly a new design.

The setting is Solwezi, a city in the north-west of Zambia, at 10am on an ordinary weekday. Solwezi is the capital of North-Western Province. The town has approximately 65,000 inhabitants. Most of the people living there are somehow connected to the copper mines. A mine worker is checking the fire extinguisher. What he doesn`t know is that the overpressure gauge is out of order and, sure enough, the whole things explodes, injuring his hand. A VERY IMPORTANT PIECE OF PAPER – that’s what a VIPOP is. And here it is: the Air Operator Certificate, presented to Flying Mission Zambia by the ZCAA, the regulating body for aviation here in Zambia.
It has taken 2 and a half years to acquire this certificate and is the ‘passport’ to more ministry in Southern Africa for Flying Mission Zambia. National changes required Flying Mission to register as a commercial organisation and qualify for the new status. Much paperwork and re-structuring took place at Chilongolo to make it happen.

Every kind of skill is being employed by the team in order to finish this part of the infrastructure and integrate the administration department into the building. ‘Let’s talk business’ say Timo and Nina, as they explain their parts in connecting people in Zambia.
Timo: Gonzaga University, USA, once a year offers a study trip into rural Zambia to the town of Zambezi and its surrounding area. The students spend three weeks in the bush, learning about the culture, the country and its people and teaching a variety of different classes from which the Zambians may profit. May was the month this year.
How is FMZ involved? Flying Mission Zambia is the bridge between Lusaka and Zambezi.
